Customs and Traditions…..
A popular religious tradition since the Middle Ages associated with the Feast of the Epiphany is the blessing of homes. The ritual calls for a priest or parent to mark ,with blessed chalk, the inside of the main door with the initials of the Magi (Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar) and a code of the current year connected with crosses. There is another explanation for the initials: they stand for the words Christus mansionem benedicat, which means “May Christ bless this house”.
Mark the door with : 20+C+M+B+15; as you do so pray: “ May Christ bless this house and remain with us throughout the new year”. Sprinkle the doorway with holy water.
In this way, we invite Jesus to be a “guest” in our home, a listener to each conversation, a guide for troubled times, and a blessing in times of thanksgiving.
